Hi Michelle,

To continue the train analogy.   Yes,  as a train can only do simple things left right up down stop go etc.  So too can a computer only do simple things.  Load a number store it add something to it compare it skip an instruction etc.

But like with trains that can only do simple things but by combining these simple things we create a multitude of different types of trains that go a multitude of different things in a multitude of different places.

Computers also only do simple things.  Very quickly.  But when these simple things are  combined we can do a multitude of different thinks.  But under the hood the computer is still only doing loads adds compares stores and skips.

Maybe the following will help:

https://www.khanacademy.org/computing/computers-and-internet/xcae6f4a7ff015e7d:computers/xcae6f4a7ff015e7d:introducing-computers/a/what-is-a-computer

Another analogy,  the alphabet.   26 letters and look what we can do with them when we combine them!

In multiple languages too.  The same letters do English which I understand and Spanish which I don't and French which  I should etc.
