Just to follow up in our discussion.

Here's a good explanation about using channel 165 (in 5 Ghz Wifi)

Other sites will say "Never use ch 165". But when you dig into it says, 
because you can _only_ get 173 Mbit, out of it. Well..... My internet 
connection is _only_ 25 Mbit, and my router (a TP-Link WDR4300) is a 
802.11n router, and won't push that many bits.

So.... I find ch 165 working quite well at my house, including going 
through walls.
