Just wanted to let you know that Deid and I have been working on
how we might meet again at Camosun. We are hoping for a similar
setup as to what we had before (a room, a projector, and
internet). <br>

To that end, we met with one of the Computer Science Dept.
Information and Computer Science (ICS) instructor, Michael
Horie, this past week, to see how we could do that. <br>
<br>
He suggested that the ICS department would be more interested in
helping us out, if we helped them out, which is not
unreasonable. They have a "Capstone" project, where students
spend a significant amount of time working on a final real world
project. ICS is interested in us folks in the "real world" to
submit and sponsor projects. <br>

<p>Michael suggested a web server as a potential project, but
there are other projects which we could suggest. For example, I
have been thinking of a network monitoring project for sometime
now.<br>

The focus on the projects should be primarily software, as these
are ICS students. So wiring up AC relays, and turning on/off
things is probably beyond their skill set. The projects need to
be achievable by the students in a semester's time frame.<br>
<br>
We are looking for projects, with a list of requirements, and
milestones for completion, as well as sponsors who would be
willing to meet with the students (usually there are two to
three students per project) on a regular basis, and help
shepherd them along in completing the project. <br>

<p>As you can see from the time line below, time is of the
essence. <b>February 22 is the deadline</b>. <br>

Our time commitment as sponsors would be about 8 months total
elapsed time with a meetings with the students as required, but
most likely at a minimum weekly during the final term, 3 or 4
months. In order to be a successful Capstone Project, a sponsor
must be prepared to work with faculty and students to complete
the project. </p>

<p>The Timeline would include 2 terms:</p>
<ul>
<li>ICS 280: Winter Term (January to April). </li>
</ul>
<dl>
<dd> Students form project teams, prepare resumes or portfolios
and review approved projects. A team may put forward their own
project sponsor, as long as the project gets approved by the
Computer Science Department using the same review process and
deadlines as all project submissions. During this term, the
students will also create a Project Charter as a kick off for
the project. </dd>

<li> ICS 290: Summer Term (May to August) </li>
</ul>

<dd> The project groups will focus a majority of their time on
the project through gathering requirements and implementation.
Students are also preparing for their final Capstone Symposium
Showcase that will take place during August. </dd>

<p>Students typically need to meet with and/or talk to sponsors
and stakeholders at least once per week throughout this process.

<li> January: Project Requests are made. Project Teams are
formed </li>
<li> February: The meet and great between prospective
sponsors and project teams. </li>
<li> March: Final confirmation of match between sponsor and
teams. </li>
<li> April: Completion of Project Charter. </li>
<li> May – July: Project requirement gathering and
implementation. </li>
<li> August: Capstone Symposium (3rd Friday) and project
wrap-up. </li>
</ul>
<p>Michael would like us to respond in the next week or so. Then
he can pitch the idea to his department head. <br>

I would like to do this via the discussion list, but if we need
to have a SG meeting on this topic, I am willing to do that as
