A few thoughts: 

Is the WP database SQL?

We don't need to specify how to do this, although if we have a preferred technology, then we need to specify  it.

Regardless of the choice of technology and platform,  we won't want the students working on our live system.  We could spin up a virtual machine somewhere or a Pi or ....

If we go with the project that starts this semester, then implementation doesn't start until May.  Planning is done until then.
